I’d say I lack the words to describe it, but that would be a blatant lie. So let me start by saying this: life is a bitch.

The night started out well enough. I entered the room when some of the others were already present. All of them young, none of them too interested in manners. Everyone being generally friendly and at least pretending to be happy to see oneanother. Though I know that we’re all none too nice a creature I still sometimes like to delude myself.

So while we were enjoying a bit of conversation every here and there, enter the idiot: ancilla of my esteemed clan. Goes by the name of Leveroux, though I have no idea on how to spell that and, yes, I am not going to honor him by looking it up. And what’s it he does? Yes! He asked about his child, Miss Mitchell. Who remains lost without a trace. I kept telling him that in times of war people tend to disappear. Which obviously made no sense to him and therefore him to the most pointless partner in conversation one could possibly have. His presence alone also did a good deal of jeopardizing Contarini’s new position, since he had to grovel to a man who was obviously less than half as bright than any man I would call an idiot. Not only that, but also did he have to bring his little plaything. A girl that behaved so much out of line that it annoyed even me, behaving as if she could pull rank over us. Not too bright either.

The one thing that changed through this was the fact that for once I agreed even with Arkada. But since she seemed just as annoyed as everybody else it was only fitting to see how she was doing. The ancilla also had it in for her. Must be an old acquaintance of his. Even caught myself feeling somewhat sorry for her. Speaking of Pinky though Brain was nowhere to be seen. Ah, what a primogen he would have made. Utterly absent. Therefore as good as oblivious to anything happening around him. Perfect! Should have thought of this sooner. But then – he would also be a royal pain in the ass, so it’s better this way.

The whole thing got to Alessandro though. I can see why it did. Regretably there was just so much I could do, except for trying… well… trying to be – the closest thing a dead man can have to a friend, I suppose. He left early then. All that was left to do for me then was to stay put and keep my eyes and ears open for him, which I did the best I could.

Just when I thought the evening couldn’t possibly go any worse I stumbled into Shiraz and his lot. Which, who would have thought, was a good thing. He seemed interested in what was going on, due to the fact that information is a good currency here. But his interest also appeared genuine on another level. Still I couldn’t tell him anything. Was comforting to know anyway. Same goes for Josef and J. B.. Thing is thouogh… For some reason J. B. knows about my little habbit. I doubt that Alessandro told him. So I’ll have to figure out how he came to know about this.

Shiraz’s clanmate however was less fortunate. Our wager is still on. Though he got close a couple of times I don’t think he can make it before time runs out. And he only has one evening left. Then again, we’re both bound by our own concept of sportsmanship. I doubt either of us will feel any real harm, no matter the result of that bet.

Later that evening I stumbled into the countess. She told me to extend her best wishes to Contarini as well as send him her husband’s best. “He misses him in every aspect.” I hesitate to think about the multitude of things that could mean. Don’t think I should know. Don’t think I want to know. Will ask Alessandro anyway.

This time I didn’t Anila again. Surprisingly enough. She’s even got a firm grip on the way Toreador should be. Now who is to say whether she was just saying that to please me? And then… Who really cares whether she did. It was a good, if short, conversation.

Brings me right down to the most interesting conversation I had… Grimm. The Tremere was offered something he must be very eager to get. In exchange he’ll have to find Mitchell. We agreed that she’d better not return to the domain. She wouldn’t stay on her feet for long. Grimm said that a place in New Orleans is hard to come by. Doubt he’d want one. He also said that I could tell whether he succeeded or not by seeing him absent or not. Curious. I don’t think I want him to succeed. Even if it isn’t for Mitchell’s sake…

Probably the worst evening I had this far.
