It is an odd thing to watch a man go out into the night, knowing that he is still a boy. His headphones plugged in, a navigation device in his pocket, listening intently to the music and directions on the phone. He took nothing with him that would allow him to recharge the batteries of that phone, so I have to assume that, once he reaches his destination, the phone will be deactivated and only used in utmost emergency.
24 hours since he left now. A period of time and already surpasses any other of us being apart in length. Usually twelce hours is the most he can tollerate without summoning me for one thing or another. I have always taken care of him. And I pride myself with knowing that I have done a very good job in that. I owe him that much.
I had the appartment clean and ready precisely one hour after his departure. Now the place feels strangely deserted. There is no life in it anymore. No faint clicking on the keyboard, not the sound of the sea playing on the stereo, no laughter and particularily disturbing not the usualy sounds of love-making from any of the rooms. Everything remains hauntedly quiet.
Up to now two messages have been sent here. Messages he will not be able to reply to for one week. Something that will likely eat away at his patience. Just about the worst thing one can do to him is taking away his ability to communicate. Still he insisted that this be done properly. Except for the message he sent to Mr. di Leon. A security measure I made him take. Mr. di Leon is very capable in his field of expertise. Therefore, for this purpose he is the bast fail-safe Lord Elyot could choose.
What is truely worrysome is the thought of Thursday. By that time he will be half starved… Deprived of his usual distractions. Most likely of the challanges he sets for himself. Worst of all there will be hardly a sign of affection, especially since he could not act on it, even if there was one. It will be very hard to handle for the boy.
I am left to wonder how this will influence him. And with too much time on my hands to mull this over. And I hesitate to contact Miss Metcalf or Miss Diana on the matter. Both of them would be worried and probably tell me to go after him either way. Which would equal direct disobedience and ensure both women his anger.
