Iason, Early Afternoon of Day 2

My dear Gale,

The day shift barely passed noon for now. But the most amazing things happen to remind us about who we are.
The aggressors are on board and were granted a meal at the mess. Naturally, most people on board were not quite happy. I myself was distressed enough to make a mistake I will have to work very long and hard for to mend. But that is another story for another time.
One of the marines was on guard duty in front of the mess. He had to keep his weapon ready, keep his eyes on the door and not move. And then the most incredible thing happened.
While I am used to single military units helping out a comrade, I am not used to an entire ship doing the same. Someone had grabbed a plate and cutlery, they had stepped before the marine and literally spoon-fed him an entire meal. I am not ashamed to admit that this brought me close to tears.
Which brings us to the kind of question that maybe we should ask ourselves now. It is no longer simply a matter of whether or not humanity survives. But also, what kind of humanity we wish for to survive.
We can become more and more cold-hearted and keep making decisions that are probably more rational. Over time, we might even turn cruel to save our own skin. But if we do that, then are we really that much better than the aggressors on board that ship or maybe even the Cylons?
If we were to become monsters, should we even want to have that kind of humanity survive? Or are we left to assume that even this monster, in time, will change for the better again? Perhaps I should talk to the Chaplain about this.
